Restless kids? Bored on a camping trip? Waiting in a restaurant? Three dice can change everything. Play this simple but clever game - Everest!
1. GOAL: Ascend and descend “Mt. Everest” one numbered step at a time. First one to summit and return to home base wins.
2. SET UP: You’ll need three dice, a piece of paper for each player (a placemat or napkin will do), and a pen or pencil. Any number can play. (Hint: three dice fit easily in a little container in your purse or backpack. In a pinch, you can actually use a dice-rolling app but free apps may include ads.)
3. PREPARE TO PLAY: Each player draws a tall triangle with the numbers 1 – 12 going up the left side and the numbers 12 – 1 going down the right side as shown.
4. PLAY: Players take turns rolling the three dice, one roll per turn. To start climbing the mountain, a player must roll a “1”. If, on the same turn, the player rolls a “2”, the player can advance to that position. The player must (a) roll the actual number of the next position on the mountain or (b) roll a combination of dice that totals the next number. For example, if a player rolls a “1”, a “2”, and a “3” on the first roll, she can cross of positions 1, 2, and 3 (as rolled) but also 4 (3+1), 5 (3+2), and 6 (3+2+1). If the next number is not rolled or dice can’t be combined, play ends and passes to the next player. Players continue rolling, crossing off numbers, and passing the dice. The first player to climb Everest and return to base camp wins.
5. OPTIONS: If young children are stuck and getting impatient, feel free to allow three bonus rolls per game.
Enjoy!
